Diatomaceous earth is a type of natural sediment, which is chalky in appearance and is made up of silica-based cell walls of dead diatoms. It is known by the name of diatomite as well. Diatoms are single-celled algae which are microscopic and mostly found in marshes, oceans, ponds and lakes all over the world. These cells have silica skeletons which display a number of intricate structures and have a diameter of about 10 to 200 microns. Diatomaceous earth is available in food-grade form and has been approved for use in the manufacturing and processing of many household food items.

Although diatomaceous earth is a useful organic product, its benefits are not based on scientific studies and are rather founded on the personal opinions and experiences of the people who have used it. There are a number of people who wonder about the diatomaceous earth food grade side effects. The following is an attempt to answer these concerns.

Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade Side Effects

The FDA considers diatomaceous earth as a filter aid in the manufacturing of other products and is harmless in that regard. But it hasn’t been approved for human consumption by the FDA, and most of the testimonials of the product suggest that there is no major health issue associated with it and there aren’t any known diatomaceous earth food grade side effects to report too. There have been no reports of toxic effects after ingestion of this product from the International Programme on Chemical Safety.

However, overconsumption of anything is not a good idea and this is true for diatomaceous earth as well. Keep its consumption down to 1 teaspoon per day mixed in a drink. Only buy food grade diatomaceous earth for eating purposes and consult with a doctor before using it as a supplement if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Warning:

  • Inhaling diatomaceous earth can cause symptoms like bloody nose, irritation in the nose, eye and throat, coughing, sneezing and breathing difficulties which are a sign of temporary respiratory irritation. Children, smokers and asthma patients are more susceptible to these side effects of diatomaceous earth. However, removal of exposure results in improvement of symptoms.

  • At extreme temperature, diatomaceous earth converts into crystalline silica which causes lung disease. Exposure to this form of diatomaceous earth is an occupational hazard meaning that only those workers who come in contact with it on a consistent basis are at risk while casual contact is harmless.

Diatomaceous Earth Health Benefits

As there haven’t been any reports of well-known diatomaceous earth food grade side effects, trying this product to gain good health is an option worth considering. However, use only food grade diatomaceous earth because other types of this product are artificially treated and are thus not safe to use.

There are 14 trace minerals present in food grade diatomaceous earth. Amorphous silica is the main component in food grade diatomaceous earth and is present in an amount of around 85%. The health benefits that can be obtained from silica are well-documented and have been backed up by some research as well. The following are some of the diatomaceous earth health benefits that have been reported by some of the users who have included it in their diet, so it is possible that your experiences differ from them.

How to Consume Diatomaceous Earth

1

Get Some Juice or Water

In a glass, pour around 6-8 ounces of juice or water. Add ½ teaspoon of diatomaceous earth in this glass of water or juice.

2

Mix It Together

Stir the diatomaceous earth into the glass of juice or water. Diatomaceous earth is not soluble in water and thus would not dissolve but will remain suspended in the liquid unless you give it time to settle at the bottom of the glass. Make sure to drink the liquid as soon as you have stirred the diatomaceous earth into it.

3

Limit the Amount

Drink this liquid daily before a meal. It is best to limit the daily consumption of diatomaceous earth under 1 tablespoon a day and never to exceed it under any circumstances.

Tips
  • It is best to take the advice of poison control staff in your area if you have any doubts that someone has consumed an unsafe amount of this nonfood substance.
  • For people interested in trying diatomaceous earth, it is recommended that they begin with low amounts like ½ tsp and increase their intake slowly until achieving a level they are comfortable with.
  • It is important to stop the diatomaceous earth from settling at the bottom so drink the liquid immediately after it has been mixed.

My friend has been taking this and it's been helping her symptom but also has caused dry skin and her hair iseems very dry. I was told to get some commercial-grade to help rid my house of fleas that my dog had acquired. The vet says that it drys the bugs from inside out. Now this concerns me a little bit if you're ingesting it. A teaspoon a day probably isn't enough to be concerned about but over a long period of time who knows? I might also add that my friend is having a tough time having bowel movements now, where is it says de helps keep you regukar.

The skin on my hands has been flaking off and is quite tender in patches. Is this the product getting rid of "old age spots" and I must be patient ? I am old.....76..... and it's doing wonders for my diagnosed osteo-arthritis in my hip .....moderate to severe.....no pain on taking this. The pain was minimal.......just a dull ache in the groin but stopped me walking. Just worried about the backs of my hands .

I have been taking a full teaspoon a day with juice. I have had times when it hadn't dissolved all the way and still drank it. Feeling really good I must say! Lots of energy. However, my blood pressure seems pretty high since I'm taking this! I take no meds at all for anything. I was told its suppose to help with blood reassure staying low. Anyone else experiencing high blood pressure with this?

Hi Kerry, Peeling skin may signal a detoxification process. Have you been involved in anything toxic that might have been absorbed by the skin on your hands? You could make sure to take omega fatty acids and coconut oil, as well as use coconut or neem oil on your hands and see if that helps. F.

In the beginning of your article you say that we must limit our intake to 1 teaspoon per day. Further down you say 1 tablespoon per day. I understand that 1 tablespoon per day is the recommended dose

I have been recovering from serious candida and mental issues due to my bad eating habits, I have gone Vegan and implemented DE into my daily intake and have really found the great detox benefits indeed. 2 months or so now and can see that what I put in my body will greatly effect the outcome! DE alone is one of the good tools for better gut health....Food is the biggest tool to good health!

You are in error about food grade DE on 2 or 3 things. First, it was passed by the FDA long ago. It is GRAS. Amorphous silica is not even required to show proof any more and is in so many food substances that it would be ludicrous for me to even try to list them. Second, it will dissolve in a cup of coffee if you put it in a blender. Do not be surprised when it turns a milky white. Third, it would take 2% of your weight to harm you. A teaspoon or two consumed will not harm you. It will kill any parasite or insect who comes across it. It is generally safe for pets but please use your common sense. Sprinkled with Tumeric it is a miracle drug. You don't have to worry about a gastric bypass. I had an intestinal bypass 40 years ago and that was the worst. I went through 7 years of hell and then had it reversed. My pathway is small. Eat prunes everyday. Between these three substances you will first lower your pain. You may also prevent or help any cancer or Alzheimer's disease as well as a slew of other things. If you don't believe me, study! 03/03/2016 Al Pall

I would like to try DE but am wondering if I should because I already have low blood pressure. Is it safe for me to take DE, or should I not try it?
