It is quite common to not feel well and have an urge to throw up. When you're feeling sick, you will feel nauseous and be low at energy. You may experience this for many different reasons, but it usually happens due to IBS, migraine, chemotherapy, general anesthesia, pregnancy, medications, food poisoning or motion sickness. Whatever the cause, this can be quick discomforting and make it difficult to continue doing your day-to-day tasks. If you want to find a perfect cure, you first need to identify why you're feeling sick. But if you want to relieve such kind of feelings, here are some suggestions you can try.

How to Stop Feeling Sick

You can definitely try a number of fixes to stop feeling sick. The best way is to identify what's making you feel nauseous in the first place. You need to understand that if you're experiencing dizziness and vomiting, this could be due to some serious underlying conditions. Some of the serious causes include encephalitis, meningitis, brain tumors, and appendicitis. You should go see your doctor if you also notice blood in the vomit or you experience other symptoms, such as confusion, stiff neck, severe headache, rapid breathing and lethargy. If the sick feeling is not that serious, try the following methods.

Try Some Food

If it's not that serious, you may consider taking some self-care measures, and the best thing you can do is to try some specific foods to prevent nausea. Here are some of the foods you can try:

  • Apple: Eating apples is a good idea because it will help throw nausea-inducing chemicals out of your body. The fiber in apples makes them so special, but avoid eating too much of it or you may worsen your symptoms. You can also eat some crunchy raw veggies for the similar effect.

  • Crackers: Try foods with high starch content, such as bread, saltines and toast. You may also consider eating crackers before you get out of bed in the morning – this will help absorb stomach acids and make you feel better.

  • Ginger: You can find capsules of powdered ginger and eat them to reduce vomiting and nausea. A cup of ginger tea will have the similar effect. You can also consider eating ginger candies, gingersnap cookies or pickled ginger for relief.

  • Water: Keep drinking water to stay hydrated. Be sure to take small sips only – this will help reduce headaches without upsetting your stomach.

  • Mint: Chewing on fresh mint may help a lot when you're feeling sick. Its refreshing aroma will have a magical effect on your senses and leave a calming effect on your stomach as well. You may also consider drinking a cup of mint tea to relieve your symptoms.

  • Banana: If you've already started throwing up, you may consider snacking on a piece of banana. Bananas work because they are rich in potassium, the levels of which usually go down when you're vomiting.

  • Jelly: You usually feel nauseous because of stomach acids, and that's why eating jelly will help relieve your symptoms. It works by creating a type of lining around your stomach – it also neutralizes the acid and makes you feel much better.

Relax Yourself

While eating nice stuff will definitely help improve your feelings, you may still need to do something to relax your nerves. It's obvious that you'll be panic when you're feeling sick or start throwing up. You should control your nerves and try not to be too active. Here's what you can do to relax yourself to improve your condition:

  • Always do your best to keep your head as still as possible.

  • Bend your knees a bit when lying down to alleviate pain.

  • Kneel on your both knees and place your forehead directly on your pillow to feel relaxed.

  • Don't get up quickly after resting.

You may also consider using a cool, wet towel on your forehead or take a quick nap to improve your symptoms. Or just try those special ways to make you relaxed.

Breathe Fresh Air

Locking yourself up in your room may not help a lot. You need fresh air to overcome that nauseous feeling. Here's what you can do:

  • Change the position of your fan to ensure it blows directly on your face. This will help reduce nausea and improve your symptoms.

  • Don't sit in hot rooms where there are repulsive smells or your nausea will become worse.

  • Taking a short walk to get fresh air will make you feel good. Don't go for a long walk if your nausea doesn't get better.

Take Medications

It is true that self-care measures will work in most cases and prevent vomiting and dizziness when you're feeling sick. However, it is important to try something different when these simple measures don't improve your symptoms. You can try certain medications to reduce nausea and headaches.

You can always opt for over-the-counter medications for relief. The list includes Maalox, Pepto-Bismol and Mylanta. These OTC medications will help reduce upset stomachs, but you can also try Nauzene and Emetrol. You can make a right choice by paying attention to what's causing nausea in the first place. Sometimes, you may have to use anti-motion sickness drugs such as Dramamine to treat diarrhea.

Note

It is important to mention that even after your nausea is no longer present, you may still be in a dehydrated state. Look for specific signs such as dry mouth, increased thirst, dark yellow urine, infrequent urination, a sunken appearance to your eyes or low of skin elasticity. If you notice these symptoms, you may consider paying a visit to your doctor's office to see if you need intravenous fluids or have to take other measures.
